James Peterson Shakes Up Ugandan Radio with Major Move to Nxt Radio
James Peterson is one of the most recognizable and influential figures in Ugandan radio broadcasting. Over a career spanning more than two decades, his distinct voice, sharp audio production skills, and high-energy on-air presence have earned him a massive following across the country. The attached image captures Peterson in a modern radio production studio, a natural environment for a man who has dedicated his life to masterfully navigating the airwaves.
Early Career and the Rise at KFM
James Peterson officially stepped into mainstream media prominence when he joined 93.3 KFM in 2010. KFM, a major commercial radio station owned by the Nation Media Group, served as the launchpad for his widespread celebrity status. During his time at the station, Peterson proved his incredible flexibility as a host. He worked across almost every major programming slot, including mornings, mid-mornings, and prime-time slots.
He first handled the popular show Hitsville and eventually moved on to co-host the high-profile Breakfast Bonanza alongside fellow presenter Precious TM. However, he is perhaps best remembered by KFM loyalists for his long run on the evening drive program, famously known as the K-Drive. Alongside his co-hosts, Peterson turned the late-afternoon commute into an engaging blend of upbeat music, lighthearted banter, and interactive entertainment.
The Major Shift to Nxt Radio
In March 2022, the Ugandan media landscape experienced a major shakeup when Next Media Services announced a complete restructuring of its audiovisual radio station, 106.1 Nxt Radio. As part of an aggressive talent-grabbing strategy to dominate urban radio frequencies, Nxt Radio successfully signed Peterson away from KFM.
Peterson’s high-profile departure was celebrated as a major win for Nxt Radio. He was brought on board to head the station’s flagship afternoon and evening drive show, Nxt Transit (also stylized as The NextTranzit), which airs weekdays from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
To build a powerhouse drive-time slot, Nxt Radio paired Peterson with two of Uganda’s biggest entertainment personalities:
- Ronnie McVex: A highly popular stand-up comedian who brought rapid-fire humor to the studio.
- Martha Kay: A famous digital creator, actress, and socialite who added high lifestyle energy.
Together, the trio turned the Nxt Transit into a massive success story. The show is highly regarded for its comedic chemistry, listener participation segments, and live streaming video element via the Afro Mobile application. In addition to his weekday duties, Peterson handles weekend audiences by hosting The Weekend Charge on Saturday mornings.
A Multi-Talented Media Professional
Beyond his work behind the microphone, Peterson is recognized as a highly skilled audio engineer, producer, and media consultant. His career success is backed by three industry awards celebrating his production and petersonjames.com presentation skills. Outside the studio walls, he manages an independent events management company and actively trains upcoming generations of broadcast journalists through private media consultancies. His enduring career stands as a clear example of adaptability and professional growth within East Africa’s competitive mass media industry.
